Protecting Your Boat from Theft

It is unfortunately more common than you would think for a boat to be stolen straight from a dock or yard. To prevent theft, you can take simple yet effective steps to protect your boat from potential theft.

Invest in Reliable Locks
Along with securing the boat itself to the dock, you should take care to lock certain expensive and important parts of your boat, such as locking down your engine, chaining propellers and tires, etc. This can help prevent would-be thieves from stealing pieces of your boat they might otherwise take and sell. Steel is generally recommended for these locks. boat on the water

Locks should also be used when your boat is parked on a trailer. Secure your boat to the trailer and your trailer to something solid.

Bar the Doors
To keep people out of the cabin or hatch of your boat, try using steel bars to keep the entrances from being breached. This can make it much more difficult for someone to break in.

Invest in a Strong Security System
Having an anti-theft alarm where your boat is stored or on the boat itself can be extremely useful for notifying when someone is trying to break in or steal. It can even deter thieves who see that there is an alarm system in place, as they will avoid being easily caught.

Take Personals and Valuables Off the Boat
When not in use, take the valuables off of your boat so as not to attract thieves. If you must keep something valuable on board, keep it hidden and locked up so that it is invisible at first glance. This is especially important as basic boat insurance won’t always cover the items on your boat that are lost, stolen or destroyed.

Install a Cutoff Device
Some companies make devices for boats that can cut off the engine of a boat if it has been stolen. This works on fuel or electrical and can keep thieves from getting away with your boat if they try to take off in it.

Increasing the safety of your boat is not only important for your peace of mind but it can also help you save money on boat insurance. The less likely you are to file a claim, the more you may save on your monthly premiums.
